Literacy One to One
St. James’ One to One Literacy program Volunteers since 1998 have been helping Strathcona School students improve their reading skills. Tutors find that their own love of reading can be infectious and helps the children learn to love reading, too. A love of children and enjoyment of their company coupled with a good sense of humour helps them learn to enjoy reading, and to build their self-confidence.
St. James’ One to One volunteers help the children one morning or afternoon each week, on the same day and at the same time (since consistency is important). Strathcona teachers select the children. They look forward to their special time in the reading room with their tutor.
Almost all of our students speak English as a second language; they have limited literacy skills. Some don’t read at all yet; but One to One volunteers soon see a spark ignited--a love of reading and the joy of learning.
